If You Choose to Use Chlorine
While Tanktribe generally recommends gentler water treatment options where possible, many customers successfully use chlorine by following good water care practices.
Using Chlorine Granules (Not Recommended)
Granules can work, but they carry a higher risk because they dissolve quickly and can create concentrated chlorine "hot spots."
If you choose to use chlorine granules:
Always pre-dissolve them in a clean bucket of water.
Pour the dissolved solution into the tank while the circulation pump is running.
Never scatter granules directly into the tank.
Never allow undissolved granules to sit on the base.
Maintain free chlorine between 1–3 ppm.
Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6.
Run continuous filtration where possible.
Test your water regularly.
Carry out periodic biofilm cleaning of the plumbing system.
Using Chlorine Tablets (Preferred)
If chlorine is your chosen sanitizer, slow-dissolving tablets are generally the better option for galvanized stock tanks.
When used correctly they provide more stable chlorine levels and reduce the risk of damaging the zinc coating.
If you use chlorine tablets:
Always place tablets inside a floating dispenser.
Keep the filtration pump running whenever the tablet is dissolving (24/7 operation is ideal).
Never place a tablet directly into the tank.
Never leave tablets in the water if the circulation pump is switched off.
Remove the floating dispenser if the system will be shut down for several days.
Maintain free chlorine between 1–3 ppm.
Keep pH between 7.2 and 7.6.
Maintain continuous filtration where practical.
Test water regularly.
Periodically clean the system to remove biofilm.
Following these practices will usually provide the longest possible life for your galvanized stock tank.
