How to Keep Hot Tub & Cold Plunge Water Clean Without Chlorine

How do you keep cold plunge water clean?
Cold plunge water can quickly become contaminated through regular use.
Sweat, body oils, skincare products, dirt and other organic matter are introduced into the water every time someone gets in. Even though cold water generally creates different conditions from a heated spa, it still needs to be properly maintained.
For a cold plunge that is being used regularly, we recommend combining:
Water treatment
Filtration
Regular filter cleaning
Periodic water changes
Keeping the plunge covered when not in use
Showering before entering where possible
A good maintenance routine can dramatically reduce the amount of work required to keep your plunge looking and feeling fresh.
Do you need chlorine in a cold plunge?
Not necessarily.
Chlorine is commonly used to sanitise swimming pools and spas, but it isn't the only water-treatment option available.
Eco3SPA uses an active-oxygen-based sanitising system rather than chlorine, making it an alternative for people who would prefer not to use traditional chlorine products in their plunge.

What is Eco3SPA?
Eco3SPA is a water-care system designed to make maintaining spa and cold-plunge water straightforward.
The core system consists of three stages:
Step 1 – Cleaner
Step 1 is used when carrying out a full water change. It helps clean the internal plumbing and circulation system before the old water is drained.
Step 2 – Conditioner
Step 2 is added to the fresh water and helps condition the water as part of the ongoing Eco3SPA treatment system.
Step 3 – Sanitiser
Step 3 is the regular sanitising treatment.

How to use Eco3SPA in a cold plunge
For a typical residential cold plunge, we recommend establishing a simple routine rather than waiting until the water starts to look or smell unpleasant.
When filling the plunge
Approximately every three months, run Eco3SPA Step 1 Cleaner through the plumbing before draining the plunge.
After refilling with fresh water, add:
Step 2 Conditioner – approximately 60ml per 300 litres
and
Step 3 Sanitiser Granules – approximately 5g per 300 litres
Always follow the current instructions supplied with your Eco3SPA products.
Before using your plunge
If the plunge hasn't been used for more than 24 hours, a top-up dose of Step 3 Sanitiser Granules may be required.
This helps maintain the sanitising treatment between sessions.
Weekly
Use an Eco3SPA Test Strip and compare the result with the recommended range.
If the reading is low, add the appropriate amount of Step 3 and test the water again after it has circulated.
Monthly
Re-dose Step 2 Conditioner according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Keeping a regular routine is much easier than trying to recover water that has already become heavily contaminated.
Do you need a filter in a cold plunge?
For a plunge that is being kept filled and used regularly, we strongly recommend filtration.
Water treatment and filtration perform different jobs.
The treatment helps control microorganisms in the water, while the filter physically removes suspended particles and debris as the water circulates.
Used together, they make maintaining a cold plunge considerably easier.
This is particularly important if several people are using the plunge or it is being used frequently.
Can you use Eco3SPA without a filter?
Eco3SPA can still be used as a water-treatment product in a plunge without filtration, but it doesn't replace a physical filter.
Without continuous filtration, debris and contaminants aren't being mechanically removed from the water.
For an unfiltered plunge, we'd therefore recommend more frequent water changes and cleaning, particularly when the plunge is being used regularly.
If you're planning to leave the same water in your plunge for extended periods, adding a filtration system is one of the biggest improvements you can make.
How often should you change cold plunge water?
There isn't one fixed schedule that works for every cold plunge.
How long your water lasts depends on factors including:
How often the plunge is used
How many people use it
Whether users shower beforehand
Whether the plunge has filtration
Water temperature
The effectiveness of your maintenance routine
Whether the plunge is covered when not being used
A well-maintained residential plunge with effective filtration and appropriate water treatment can generally go considerably longer between changes than an untreated, unfiltered plunge.
Regardless of your normal schedule, if the water becomes difficult to maintain, develops an unusual smell or appearance, or you're unsure about its condition, the safest approach is to drain, clean and refill the plunge.
What if cold plunge water becomes cloudy?
Cloudy water is usually a sign that something in your maintenance routine needs attention.
Check your treatment level first and inspect your filtration system.
A dirty or clogged filter can significantly reduce filtration performance.
Eco3SPA Water Clarifier can also be used when appropriate to help deal with cloudy water.
However, water-care products shouldn't be used to indefinitely rescue poorly maintained water. Sometimes the simplest solution is a fresh fill.

For most residential setups, think of cold-plunge maintenance as four simple things:
Treat. Filter. Test. Refresh.
Treat the water correctly.
Keep it circulating through a clean filter.
Test it regularly.
And periodically drain, clean and refill the plunge.
